Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp).<br />The movie begins with a terrifying image: a line of pirates and their accused confederates, shuffling on chained feet to the gallows, with a narrator citing an all-too-modern-sounding list of suspended rights. But this is no message movie. Soon we're on another wild ride from the tropics to the frozen wastes, as we pick up what happened since we last saw Jack in "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" (pulled into the deep in the clutches of a kraken) and follow the last battles between the free-roaming pirates and their allies against their nemeses from the East India Co., along with the final resolution of the contentious romance between Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) and Will Turner (Orlando Bloom).<br />The capper to 2003's "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl" and 2006's "Dead Man's Chest" was actually shot concurrently with the second (not incidentally, the third-highest international grosser of all time), and when they say "World's End," they're not kidding. The movie plunges us down to Davy Jones' locker, then hurls us into a series of violent voyages and confrontations in arctic wastes, South Sea isles and galleon-shredding gales, with Sparrow, the beauteous Swann, her sword-swain Turner and Sparrow's glibly treacherous rival captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) clashing with their deadly 18th Century pursuers, led by the smugly murderous Cutler Beckett (Tom Hollander).<br />Also in the fray: the pirates of the Singapore led by Chow Yun-Fat as the ill-tempered Capt. Sao Feng, and, aboard the Flying Dutchman, Beckett's enforcer, relentless Davy Jones himself (Bill Nighy, still sprouting tentacles and face glop). By the time of the film's climactic fight, everyone left alive is being hurled around by a full-scale sea battle, waged in what seems a near-typhoon, with everyone slashing away like Errol Flynn on amphetamines.<br />As advertised, Rolling Stone Keith Richards shows up at a pirate conference as the keeper of the pirate code, even strumming a tune on a period guitar. (It wasn't "You Got the Silver," but then, he doesn't fall out of a coconut tree here either.)<br />The movie is almost too much. Director Gore Verbinski and producer Jerry Bruckheimer have packed "World's End" with so much explosive action, opulent decor and surreal scenes of mayhem and madness -- including a mass crab-and-ship exodus, an apocalyptic-looking waterfall and life-size and miniature hallucinatory clones of Capt.<br /><br /><br />Jack, some capering around Depp's mane and shoulder -- that sometimes it's overwhelming. This sequel is frenziedly imaginative, where the first "Pirates" was sunny, fey and friendly (like Sparrow) and the second a rollicking romp.<br />"Dead Man's Chest" and "World's End" were conceived together by the original writers, Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio (who also co-wrote the first "Shrek"). But "Dead Man's Chest" is mostly buildup and "World's End" is mostly payoff. Fortunately Depp is around to keep Capt. Jack and the movie subversively off-track and delightfully imaginative. The most characteristic scenes are not so much the ferocious sea battles but moments such as Capt. Jack's wordplay or the way Davy Jones uses a tentacle-tip to flick away a tear.<br />Verbinski is far more interested in acting and performance than most high-tech blockbuster-makers, and the supporting roles, especially by Rush, Chow, Nighy and Naomie Harris as Tia Dalma, give Depp a tasty backdrop.<br />What we love about pirate movies and myths, of course, is their mix of adventure, freedom and naughtiness, and Verbinski and Depp again capture all three. In the end, "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End," with its added doses of fantasy and even some piercing social comment (about Beckett and the government's rights-trampling tyranny), does its job. Following Ron Burgundy, regional TV icon in "Anchorman," and Ricky Bobby, polestar of NASCAR cool in last summer's hit "Talladega Nights," Ferrell takes on another arrogant but soft-centered superstar in "Blades of Glory." This time he's Chazz Michael Michaels, hot-shot competitive skater and unsteadily recovering sex addict brought low by his own temper, resurrected only when he learns to skate nice and become one half of a guy/guy skating team opposite willowy Jon Heder of "Napoleon Dynamite."</span></span> <p><span class="faceonly" style="font-size:85%;"><span class="faceonly" style="font-size:85%;">An amiable hulk, Ferrell's generally more effective when he's not all over his own comedies every second. Certainly "Anchorman" was better off for people like Paul Rudd and Steve Carell in support, and "Talladega Nights" (which I found a lot less funny than "Anchorman") benefited from John C. Reilly and Jane Lynch and Gary Cole.</span></span></p> <p><span class="faceonly" style="font-size:85%;"><span class="faceonly" style="font-size:85%;">I have no idea if Ferrell's latest will strike "Talladega Nights" fans as too much of a retread, or not enough of one, or too outre in its comic vibe. That's saying something, given the Sacha Baron Cohen-on-Ferrell smooches in "Talladega." But fundamentally "Blades of Glory" works; it's full of laughs both subtle and ridiculous. And it's a full-on comic partnership between Ferrell and Heder, whether one of them is lifting the other by the crotch over his head or not. While it's full of cheap, low, stupid slapstick (I'm fine with all three) the verbal gags are faster and more plentiful than they were in "Talladega."</span></span></p> <p><span class="faceonly" style="font-size:85%;"><span class="faceonly" style="font-size:85%;">After an austere, wintry set of opening titles, a triple-lutzing preteen phenom is adopted by a steely billionaire (William Fichtner). "Forged into an uber-skater," young Jimmy becomes a boy-man (Heder), whose life is a highly controlled series of practice sessions and juice-box breaks.</span></span></p> <p><span class="faceonly" style="font-size:85%;"><span class="faceonly" style="font-size:85%;">Heder's rival is Chazz, the Garth Brooks of the ice. They tie for American gold at the world championships; a brawl ensues (a really funny one), and they're disgraced. Three years later Chazz works kiddie shows, drunk, while Jimmy fits bratty kids for skates in a sporting goods store. Then Jimmy's personal stalker informs him of a fabulous loophole in the skating federation's rules. He can compete again, if he switches divisions. His old coach (Craig T. Nelson, just right, and with some amazing rugs) brings Chazz into the equation, and while Chazz struggles with his macho distaste for his partner's balletic ways (his signature move is the "galloping peacock"), they're guided toward destiny and ultimate mastery of the most dangerous skating maneuver known to humankind, the Iron Lotus. The film's PG-13 rating refers to "a comic violent image," depicting what happens when the Iron Lotus goes awry. It's the funniest beheading in the history of film.</span></span></p> <p><span class="faceonly" style="font-size:85%;"><span class="faceonly" style="font-size:85%;">Jenna Fischer, who plays Pam Beesly on "The Office," is sweetly amusing as Jimmy's crush, deployed by her skating-fiend brother (Will Arnett) and sister (Amy Poehler) to break up the man/man act. Some of the ruthless rivalry business grows a bit tiresome. But "Blades of Glory" takes its satiric subject seriously enough to keep the payoffs coming. Two teams of writers, Jeff Cox and Craig Cox and John Altschuler and Dave Krinsky, receive screenplay credit, but the jokes don't feel rewritten; they play like the best results of two different teams' efforts.</span></span></p> <p><span class="faceonly" style="font-size:85%;"><span class="faceonly" style="font-size:85%;">The directors, Will Speck and Josh Gordon, are best known for their Geico caveman ads, and if you like those, you'll probably enjoy "Blades of Glory." "Fracture" is an exception. It features some pungent exchanges between, among others, Anthony Hopkins and Ryan Gosling, playing a murderous smoothie and his adversary, a hotshot assistant district attorney.</span></span> <p><span class="faceonly" style="font-size:85%;"><span class="faceonly" style="font-size:85%;">Like Michael Caine, Gene Hackman and plenty of other pros, Hopkins is at a point in his career where the on-screen effort expended has become practically subliminal (and sometimes frankly lazy). The difference between a less-good and a good Hopkins portrayal is the difference between fighting boredom, and fighting it and winning--transcending the fatigue through sheer, wily craftsmanship.</span></span></p> <p><span class="faceonly" style="font-size:85%;"><span class="faceonly" style="font-size:85%;">Hopkins is more engaged here than he has been in other recent assignments ("Proof," "All the King's Men"). Even when he indulges in a bit of courtroom hamming, it's selective and purposeful hamming. As for Gosling (very good in "Half-Nelson"), he may turn out to be his generation's William Hurt in terms of pauses and tics and
taking his sweet
time with even
the simplest
rejoinder. But he's playing an arrogant young pup, and his naturalistic flourishes work for the character. All his behind-the-beat grins make an interesting contrast to Hopkins, who's like a rabbit, darting from one place to another.</span></span></p> <p><span class="faceonly" style="font-size:85%;"><span class="faceonly" style="font-size:85%;">The strengths of director Gregory Hoblit's drama may well have nothing to do with what gets gets filmgoers off the couch and into the multiplex. Its story begins with the steely engineer played by Hopkins shooting his wife (Embeth Davidtz) point-blank in their isolated L.A. palace, the husband having confirmed his wife's affair with the very detective (Billy Burke) who arrives on the scene of the attempted murder.</span></span></p> <p><span class="faceonly" style="font-size:85%;"><span class="faceonly" style="font-size:85%;">This is a whopping plot point to swallow, and its improbability acts like fingers on the windpipe of the story. I liked "Fracture" despite this whopper. It looks good, for one thing. Hoblit (who directed "Primal Fear") and cinematographer Kramer Morgenthau shoot L.A. wisely, honoring both the relentless sunshine and the background smog, as well as the nocturnal atmospherics. The supporting cast includes David Strathairn as a wise owl of a D.A.; Rosamund Pike as Gosling's avid-eyed introduction to corporate law and to sex with a corporate lawyer; and Bob Gunton as Pike's father, who helps guide Gosling through his character's central question: Am I a corporate sleazebag or a man of the people?</span></span></p> <p><span class="faceonly" style="font-size:85%;"><span class="faceonly" style="font-size:85%;">Any promotional attempts on behalf of New Line Cinema to make "Fracture" look like a grabber or a thrill ride or whatever are strictly misleading. When the story arrives at checkmate you may feel a bit let down by its machinations. Getting there, however, screenwriters Daniel Pyne and Glenn Gers keep the talk lively. I enjoyed the exchanges between Strathairn and Gosling's increasingly desperate prosecutor, whose case against the Hopkins character lacks a shred of hard evidence. "What if I find new evidence?" Gosling asks. "From where?" comes the reply.
